The Pico Rivera Teen Club has been a gathering place for teens in the City for the past three decades. Housed at the Rio Hondo Youth Center, members of the club gather for regular meetings, volunteer for special events, and take excursions to local theme parks and other education places throughout the year, amongst other weekly activities.
During the past year, the club has been without their youth center. When the facility closed due to COVID-19 in 2020, like many facilities, it was expected to open the following year. However, it was noted that there was water damage inside the facility. The facility remained closed until the damage was repaired. During an attempt to repair the visible water damage, more damage was discovered, and it was determined that the facility should remain closed indefinitely until further inspection took place and the appropriate repairs could be made.
Since that announcement two years ago, the teens have called the Rio Hondo Community Center, located across the street from the Youth Center, their temporary home. Utilizing the multi-purpose room, the teens have been meeting there ever since the closure of the Youth Center. But all that is going to change soon.
Last month, City Officials held an official groundbreaking ceremony at the Youth Center, celebrating and signifying the start of the renovation project at the Youth Center. Renovations will not only address the water damage the building incurred over the years but will also bring in some new additions, such as upgraded restrooms, new floors, and a new coat of paint for the interior as well as the exterior.
The renovations to the Youth Center are anticipated to be completed in early spring. For information about the Youth Center, call 562.801.4393.
