Seniors now have another way to get out and get some low-key exercise. The City has opened the Rivera Park gym to Seniors on Wednesday mornings for Pickleball. Two courts have been set up inside the gymnasium for free Pickleball play for Seniors ages 50 and up.
If you are unfamiliar with Pickleball, it’s a smaller version of tennis, certainly less intense, but has the same principles. The game is played with a paddle and a whiffle ball designed specifically for Pickleball. Believe it or not, Pickleball has been around since 1965 and has been making its way across America and other countries. Here in Pico Rivera, the game had been piquing interest with Seniors, and it was decided to create a free Pickleball program for a month at Rivera Park as a trial. The trial period has ended, and Pickleball continues at Rivera Park with about a dozen players who show up on a regular basis, along with those who come to the gym that are curious and start to play. Not only is Pickleball great exercise, but many of the players have also commented that the friendship and camaraderie that has formed has truly been a great experience and one they look forward to each week.
The Pickleball courts are open for Seniors on Wednesdays at Rivera Park from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Players must bring their own equipment.
