Cultural ties and friendships were made stronger last month during a special visit to Pico Rivera by officials from the sister city of Mazatlán, Sinaloa, Mexico.
During a three-day visit, the Mazatlán delegation learned about the City of Pico Rivera’s local economy by visiting several manufacturers based in the City, and highlighting the economic resources available to them.
City Officials from both Cities participated in discussions regarding their respective economies and how each can continue to collaborate on an economic relationship. During the visit, the delegation also toured the Los Angeles County Sanitation District Water Reclamation Plant, the WRD Albert Robles Center for Recycling, and children’s furniture manufacturer, Million Dollar Baby Co. The visit concluded at the historic Pico Rivera Sports Arena where charro demonstrations were put on display for the delegation.
Sister City programs started in 1956 at the urging of President, Dwight D. Einsenhower, who wanted to cultivate goodwill and cultural exchanges between American and foreign cities as a way to create a more peaceful world. Pico Rivera began a sister city relationship with the City of San Luis Potosi 11 years later. In 2016, the City of Mazatlán became Pico Rivera’s second Sister City. The City of Tlajomulco de Zúñiga, Jalisco, Mexico, became the City’s third Sister City just last year.
The goal of the City’s relationships is to contribute to each other’s economies by enhancing foreign trade relations and expanding upon local economic interests.
