In a signing ceremony held this past June, Alejandro de Jesus Aguirre Curiel, Mayor of the City of Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico, joined with members of the Pico Rivera City Council to formalize an agreement for the two Cities to become Sister Cities.

The Sister City concept was established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956 as a way for United States cities to create formal partnerships with foreign cities to exchange information and ideas in order to develop friendships and deepen cultural understanding. In addition to friendships and cultural understanding, there’s also the opportunity for tourism and business opportunities, along with the exchange of ideas, the sharing of products and technologies, and the promotion of mutual assistance.

The City of Chapala covers 240 square miles located on the shores of the largest lake in Mexico, Lake Chapala. The City has a population of approximately 55,000. Chapala is the fourth Sister City for the City of Pico Rivera, following Tlajomulco de Zuniga, Mazatlán, and our first Sister City, San Luis Potosi.
