PFAS, or Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, are a toxic group of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings, also known as the “forever chemicals.” Pico Rivera is one of many cities across Southern California serviced by wells with heightened levels of PFAS, according to statewide testing in 2021. This project will help eradicate the presence of PFAS in potable water, promoting the safe consumption of water for our residents.

As of Spring 2024, construction of the PFAS Filtration Systems at Water Plant 2 and the plant at Well 5 are complete, and at Plant 1 the construction is on-going. In the coming months the systems that are completed will be filled with ion-exchange media prior to testing, start-up and commissioning for the delivery of filter water to Pico Rivera consumers.

Construction completion at Water Plant 1 will follow, with start-up and commissioning anticipated in early Summer 2024.

A separate project for the future construction of PFAS filtration at Water Plant 3 is planned for construction in 2025.
