The Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, Janice Hahn, allocated $10 million to fund the renovation of the Smith Park Aquatic Center during a Board of Supervisors Meeting held last month.
The Aquatic Center has been closed since the pandemic, when all public pools were ordered to shut down as part of the County’s Stay-at-Home orders. During the closure, City staff identified major issues with the pool that made its operation unsafe, and unable to open for the 2021 season. The Center has remained closed ever since.
The upcoming renovations will include the replacement of the entire pool casing, the replacement of the deck, pool furnishings and equipment, heaters/boilers, and a new chemical room, storage area, pool building, lighting, and security enclosure fencing. Supervisor Hahn’s $10 million contribution from the County represents the largest single source of funds for the center’s renovation.
“On behalf of our residents, we would like to thank Supervisor Hahn for her commitment and support in securing the $10 million dollars to fund the City’s Aquatic Center,” said City Manager Steve Carmona. “This will truly be an investment in our community that will provide a safe and fun place for our families to enjoy for generations to come. It’s truly an honor to have this relationship and cooperation with Supervisor Hahn that ultimately benefits our residents.”
Construction on the Aquatic Center is set to begin in Summer 2024, and its anticipated completion is expected in Summer 2025.
