Over the past few years, many members of the community have been advocating for a dog park within the City of Pico Rivera. However, the difficulty has always been finding viable “green space” for such a project. That is until now.
Last month, City officials identified an unused portion of land on the corner of Rosemead Boulevard and Gallatin Road that would be the right fit for a dog park and does not take away any land or park space opportunities from any other sport or recreational group. In actuality, with its specialized use, it will complement the City’s existing park space while creating a visually appealing entrance into the City. For the dog-loving community, this is certainly great news.
Design proposals will soon be presented to the community for feedback. A name has been selected for the dog park: The City of Pico Rivera “Alebrije Dog Park,” a name that pays homage to the City’s strong past and present Mexican-American cultural ties.
With over 7,500 active dog licenses in the City, the Alebrije Dog Park will be an amenity that dog owners from the City and surrounding communities will be able to enjoy. Many dog owners will appreciate the benefits of having a local dog park, including pet socialization, fresh air, and being able to be run in a controlled area without a leash. In addition to the dog park area, a small walking path will be included so that the local neighborhood residents will be able to use the space as well to walk safely and enjoy some outdoor exercise.
The Dog Park Project is fully funded using funds made available through the American Rescue Plan Act. There is no set date for a groundbreaking as City officials wish to host several community meetings for resident input before finalizing project details.
